Weather TL;DR: classic Scottish summer — highs in the low-to-mid 60s, showers most days but rarely all day, and Skye will be the coolest and wettest stretch. Here’s what the actual forecast shows (it reaches through ~Aug 3; after that it’s typical-August expectations):
- Edinburgh (Jul 26–28): Highs 63–67°F, lows mid-50s. A ~50% shower chance each day but small amounts — passing rain, not washouts.
- Speyside / Dowans (Jul 28–Aug 1): Highs 60–69°F, lows around 50. Showery and breezy (15–20 mph gusts some days), with one warmer day near 70 on the 31st.
- Skye (Aug 1–4): The real-deal stretch — highs only 52–62°F, a genuinely wet and windy day forecast for Aug 1 (arrival day: ~half inch of rain, 25 mph winds), improving through Aug 3. Expect at least one proper soaking; Skye weather also changes hourly, so a grim morning often turns into a fine afternoon.
- Fringe week (Aug 5–12, beyond forecast range): Typical Edinburgh August is mid-60s days, low-50s nights, rain roughly every other day, and long daylight (light until after 9pm). Fringe crowds mean lots of standing outside in queues.
Packing (high level):
- Layers, not warmth: t-shirt + long sleeve + a fleece or light sweater covers everything. You’ll add and shed layers all day. Nothing heavy needed.
- A real rain jacket with a hood — this is the one item that matters. Umbrellas are near-useless in Skye wind.
- Waterproof-ish walking shoes you can stand in all day (distillery floors, Fringe cobblestones, damp ground at scenic stops). Sneakers as backup once one pair gets wet.
- One smart-casual outfit for the nicer dinners (Three Chimneys, Queens Arms) — no jacket-and-tie anywhere on this itinerary.
